Dorothy & Nate's Wedding

Wow, I have gotten way behind in blogging....again. I know it's shocking, but it's true.

Dorothy and Nate's wedding day was the hottest day in the middle of one of the worst heat-waves I can remember. Even so, they had a beautiful wedding and were a lot of fun. I really enjoyed sharing their day with them and their family and friends.

Natalie's Senior Portraits

For Natalie's senior portraits, I met up with her, her mother and her dog Rachel at Lake Ridge Park. It was a beautiful day and we had a lot of fun trying to get Rachel to cooperate. Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot.

Dorothy & Nate's Cherry Blossom Engagement Session

As promised, here are more photos from Dorothy and Nate's engagement session among the cherry blossoms in Washington, DC. We really couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day--the blossoms were (mostly still) blooming, and we had some gorgeous end-of-day light. And I couldn't have asked for a more fun couple--Dorothy and Nate had a lot of fun with the session, and that always makes it so fun (and easy! ) for me.

Bette Noir -- Northern Virginia Band Photographer

I was recently approached, through a mutual friend, by a local band, Bette Noir (pronounced Betty Noir) to shoot some promo photos for them. As an avid music lover and concert goer, I jumped at the chance. While we haven't gotten around to actually shooting the promos, I have been able to photograph them playing live a few times. The first time was a practice and the second was a live show.

Here's a few shots from the practice, held at their rented storage unit in Alexandria, VA (apparently, practicing in a storage unit is relatively common thing, but I had never heard of it and I thought--and still think--it's totally cool):

I really enjoyed shooting these and hope to do more band & musician work in the future. If it's something I start doing a lot more of, I'll probably set up another site dedicated to it, but for now, I'm going to just post it here.

Wedding Tips: Focus on Results!

I just read this great article that really struck home with me.

Wedding Photography - Focus on Results!

It's a pretty short article, so I won't quote much. But, I highly recommend reading it if you're looking for a wedding photographer.

The author notes that a lot of time is spent talking about photographic styles, camera equipment, techniques such as flash vs. available light and other issues like film vs. digital, full-frame vs. crop sensor and so on. Then, he gets to the main point of the article:

Huh? So what does all this tell you? The answer:

Nothing!

Exactly! When you're looking for a photographer, all of that stuff is beside the point. In the end, what really matters is the photos. If the photos speak to you, what difference does it make what camera the photographer used, or if it was shot on film or digital?

And since all posts are better with a photo, here's a photo from Karen and Mikey's wedding last year that has just grown and grown on me. I feel that it's a great example of the kind of photos that I strive to take: simple, honest, and real.

I'm an avid user of Google products. Seriously, I'm a total fan boy--I use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader, Google Voice, and search (of course). My phone even runs Google Android. So, I was really interested when I saw this blog entry on the official Google blog:

Simple Wedding Planning with Google Docs

Google has partnered with Style Me Pretty to create 20 or so templates to help manage your wedding planning. I've looked at a few of them and they are great. They're well organized and include a bunch of tips that are really helpful.

They include templates to collect guest addresses, choose a photographer, plan and manage your budget, organize the seating chart and more. There's even one, the 'All-in-one wedding planner' that includes everything you need in one.

You can check them out at docs.google.com/wedding. They're really a great resource that can help to keep you organized in your wedding planning.
